What is one of your favourite Bible verses? Take a moment and try to say it off by heart and out loud. One of my favourite Scriptures is:
“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Have you ever thought of why the Scripture you chose is so special to you?
Why do I love this verse in Romans? I concluded it must connect with the deep level of faith God gave me. So what then, led to this deep level of faith? And it came to me; hHaving experienced God in all His roles/functions over the last 35 years of my life must have helped to develop this faith.
Let’s explore these in more detail, but before we do, take a few minutes and think about how you see God. What is He doing? What do you think His roles/functions are?
There will be many answers to the question, “what led to this deep level of faith?” Here are just some of them: God is a creator, father, provider, friend, helper, healer, protector, deliverer, teacher… – if this does not encourage us in our faith – what else will? Many books could be written about this. Let me pick a few Bible verses, with the hope to whet your appetite, to think and read more about it.
CREATOR: Read Genesis 1.
“For You have formed my inward parts; You have covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are YOUR works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skilfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.”
PROVIDER: Read Exodus 17:6 – When water came out of the rock.
Exodus 16:35 – The children of Israel ate manna for forty years.
Look up the Scriptures for stories of Jesus feeding the crowd of 5,000 and 10,000 people.
HELPER: Read Psalm 54:4, Hebrews 13:5-6, Psalm 118:6-8 and John 15:26 (the Holy Spirit as our helper)
DELIVERER: Read Exodus 14:21-27
PROTECTOR: Read up on Daniel in the Lions’ Den (Daniel 6:16-23)
HEALER: Read John 5:1-9, Luke 8:43-48.
What other scriptures do you know where we see God/Jesus/Holy Spirit in the role of a healer?
Enjoy all of the different aspects of today’s church service. If you agree that our faith gets strengthened by our personal experience with God, take a cup of tea and reflect on this week’s columns and add your own.
